Travis Duff – 2012 Awardee

24 years | Engineering Mechanical Trade

Travis Duff is 24 years of age and is the awardee for 2013 in the Trade of Engineering Mechanical Trade (Maintenance) Fitting and/or Turning.

Travis commenced his apprenticeship in 2006 with Mendham Engineering at Rocklea and since completing his trade in 2010 he has been employed as a Fitter Machinist and now has been promoted to Assistant Foreman.

His work involves the fabrication, reclamation and machining of equipment for the trucking, earthmoving and mining industries. His duties require leadership skills and the mentoring of apprentices under his control.

Travis plans to return to Aston Martin in Wales, where he gained work experience in 2011 while on the Mission Performance Leadership Course.

Over the past couple of years Travis has gained the following awards for his training efforts:

·           2009 and 2010 Gold Medallist Regional Worldskills Competition;

·           2011 Mission Performance Leadership Course, Wales, UK;

·           2011 BMM/WSA Scholarship Recipient;

·           2011 Worldskills Australia Champion; and

·           2012 Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador.

Part time interests include soccer, playing AFL football, restoring cars and racing go carts. His community work includes maintenance work around his local football club.

Richelle Hassett – 2012 Awardee

23 years | Retail Baker / Pastry Chef.

Richelle Hassett is 23 years of age and is the awardee for 2012 for the Vocation of Retail Baker / Pastry Chef.

Richelle commenced her apprenticeship in 2009 with Bakers Delight at Loganholme and during this time she also worked at Bakers Delight, West End and Macca’s at Forestdale. Her role responsibilities included preparing components of cakes and pastry products, assembling, decorating and plating desserts.

Concurrently, Richelle gained the Certificate III in Food Processing (Retail Baking – Bread) at the Southbank Institute of Technology in 2011.

Richelle plans to gain employment training in the United Kingdom and Europe where she understands they have excellent training facilities within their ingredient companies.

Richelle is currently employed with Andriano Zumbo in Sydney where she is gaining valuable experience before venturing overseas.

Richelle has also achieved the following awards with Worldskills:
2011 – Gold Medallist Regional Worldskills Competition; and
2012  Gold Medallist National Worldskills Competition.

Part time interests include playing the piano, watching live bands and fishing when she can find the time.

Jessie Lucas – 2012 Awardee

20 years | Commercial Cookery and Hospitality

Jessie Lucas is 20 years of age and is the awardee for 2012 in Vocation of Commercial Cookery and Hospitality. Jessie commenced her apprenticeship in 2007 with Preston Peak Winery and obtained her Diploma of Hospitality from Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE in 2011.

During her apprenticeship Jessie worked at a number of restaurants in Toowoomba and on completion of her apprenticeship she joined Metro Cafe and Events as a Chef de Partie and was later promoted to a Sous Chef. The responsibilities of this role included the creation of menus, coordination of department operations and coordinating all events and off-site catering.

Jessie is planning on visiting the United Kingdom with her scholarship and her longer term goal is to own a 30-seat restaurant on a vineyard or acreage with an ever-changing blackboard that would reflect seasonal produce.

Over the past couple of years Jessie has gained a number of awards including:
2011 Gold Medallist Regional Worldskills Competition; and
2012  Bronze Medallist National Worldskills Competition.

Jessie’s interests include keeping fit and coaching a high school team for the Junior Darling Downs Culinary Competition. Jessie also recently took part in ‘Light the Night’- a Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser.

Rhys Walsh-Tindall – 2012 Awardee

19 years | Information Technology and Network Support

Rhys Walsh-Tindall is 19 years of age and is the awardee for 2012 in the Vocation of Information Technology and Network Support.

Rhy is a full-time IT Trainee employed with the Apprenticeship Company located in Chinchilla and in 2011 he joined his host employer CS Energy’s Kogan Creek Power Station at Brigalow.

Rhys gained a Certificate III in Business Administration in 2010 and is currently studying Certificate IV in IT Networking. This training has been undertaken through Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE.

Rhys’ responsibilities at the Power Station include local helpdesk support – covering software /hardware, networking, standard operating environment deployments, structured query language reporting, asset management, network and virus monitoring and employee set-up and removal.

Rhys plans to gain employment training within the IT Industry in the United Kingdom or Canada with the ultimate goal of running an IT Department for a large organisation or starting his own business.

Rhys has been a stand-out recipient of a number of awards over the last couple of years including:

  • 2010  Catholic Education School-based Trainee of the Year;
  • 2010 Australian Vocational Student prize recipient;
  • 2012 – Gold Medallist National Worldskills Competition; and
  • 2012 – Big Brother Movement / WorldSkills Australia Scholarship. – This scholarship will see Rhy leave for the United Kingdom in June 2013 for a two week leadership training camp and then he will take up an internship for the remainder of 2013.

Part time interests include maintaining physical fitness whereby Rhys is an active member of the Chinchilla Squash Club.

Jessica Parker – 2012 Awardee

19 years | Business Services

Jessica Parker is 19 years of age and is the awardee for 2012 in the Vocation of Business Services. Jessica has a Certificate III in Business Administration, a Diploma of Business Administration from Wide Bay TAFE and the Diploma of Counselling from the Australian College of Applied Psychology.

For the past two years Jessica has been working at Community Lifestyle Support Inc located at Bundaberg and has progressed roles to now being a Personal Assistant providing administrative support to five managers. Part of her duties includes client-first contact for service delivery, managing client medications, attending management meetings and general correspondence.

Jessica plans to gain employment training with a community service organisation in the United Kingdom or Europe to bring back the latest organisational skills to her industry

Over the past couple of years Jessica has also gained a number of training related awards including the 2011  Sunrise Rotary Trainee of the Year, the 2011  Wide Bay TAFE Business Trainee of the Year and a Gold Medallist in the 2011 Regional Worldskills Competition.

Jessica’s interests also include photography and art and she has also created her own on-line business where she sells photography.
